Design Project — Repeat Patterns

Visual Mood Board
With my brief being about repeat patterns I chose images I felt best suited the theme from architecture and varied patterns to illustrations and fabric manipulation.

After consideration I thought that It'd be best to look at architecture to create a repeat pattern. Taking photographs that I'd taken of various architectures, I opened them in photoshop and created a pattern. I refused it to 20% and again by  10% to see what effect it has on how the pattern changes.
Fabric Swatches
My initial chose of fabric swatches are shown above in which there is corduroy, denim, faux suede and PVC coated cotton.
After creating my repeat patterns I decided that I did not need for all the fabrics and narrowed them down to what can be seen below the initial selection.
Design Ideas
The Design ideas show the varied fabrics chosen and how the can each be used. I  tried to use complementary colours and stay close to the blue end of the colour wheel but by adding in cream and brown it allowed for a variety which I think worked well overall.

Sketchbook Pages

A selection of pages from my personal sketchbook in which I note down possible ideas for garments and things that inspire me. This sketchbook is a useful tool for when I am making design ideas as I can refer to them for more inspiration when I feel stuck for what to do.
On the left is a freehand machine embroidery study I did whilst trying to convey my thoughts through a needle. I like the loose and carefree outcome that this has and the overall look altogether. Whilst thinking of tailored garments I began to sketch and think about the way that they'd fall on the female body when stitched together which is shown on the right hand page.

After looking at different coat designs I tried to bring these together to create my own unique design. I thought about the possibilities of using knitting but when wet the coat would be impractical which is why I later decided against it. The drawing in the upper left was made with inks that had been watered down for different shades. This is what I imagine the model looking like, and is why models I draw tend to have short hair as this is also associated with being androgynous.
Developed design idea sketch of a coat with hidden zip up pockets that allow for more room and space. I like to focus more on silhouette and I like the look of androgynous coats that do not only look good but are practical. This was the basis for this drawing.
Continuous line warm-up drawing. By focusing on illustrated faces it allowed for them to look different each time and by working dstraigunt into pen it helps me to feel warmed up and comfortable with drawing with a pen. By doing this I am less afraid of making mistakes.

GCE A2 Textiles Component 1 — The Human Form

Observations
Obervaitions and studies of the human form. I wanted to focus more on portraiture and close-ups to try and capture as much detail as possible.

Watercolour Observation
The above observation is of fashion model Winnie Harlow. I chose this as I thought it would be interesting to draw and paint as she has vitiligo. I think that This outcome was successful as I feel that I was able to capture the details.
Artist Developments
Inspired by artist Ana Theresa Barboza I tried to incorporate hand embroidery and knitting on the left to create interest and make it tactile like Barboza's style. I did the same on the right but I used thread as opposed to knitting to create movement within the piece.

GCE AS Textiles Component 2 — Plant Forms

Observations And Experiments
With my observations I tried to look into plants with varied patterns and shapes such as succulents and cacti. The hand embroidery on the right was inspired by textile artist Sarah Benning's style in which she also takes inspiration from nature.
Secondary Images From Google.
Design Ideas
With my design ideas I felt that I wanted to make more intimate piece such as underwear and tops. I thought this would allow for me to be able to work further into my final pice within the given time.

Developed Design Ideas
When developing the ideas I tried to bring together ideas from my observations and experiments along with the ideas inspired by the artists I had chosen.

GCE AS Textiles Component 1 — African Culture

Secondary Skull Observations
The observations were developed with shading pencils. I also scanned the image into photoshop to try and create a repeating pattern. The skull was developed for the final piece by adding hand embroidery like Izziyana Suhaimi and experimenting with freehand machine embroidery.

Laser Cutting Developmental Experiments
I first tried to create a successful pattern in which was inspired by African Tribal prints and then developed this on the computer to print out on the laser cutter.
Design Ideas
I tried to bring together the work within my sketchbook and I tried to create strong artist links in order to ensure that they were clear and that the garment was successful.
The design ideas were meant to portray a varied use of colour and pattern which links to the African culture theme.
Final Design Idea
My final design idea above was a jacket that used varied fabrics for texture and embroidery details. The laser cutting made was added onto the front of the pockets and reverse appliqué was used to make a statement of the back of the jacket.
